Happy Birthday to me ... !!!
As a birthday treat to myself I have purchased a few more goodies from Axminster tools.
So what are we looking at here:
and lastly just out of shot a Japanese Marking knife.
Unfortunately, the room I will be setting up as a workshop isn't ready and has to be decorated first (sometime next week), so until then I have been sharpening tools and messing about with offcuts of wood etc.
The DMT Stones and Veritas honing guide are amazing and I can sharpen chisels and plane blades to razor sharpness very quickly. The 2 3/8" No#6 Plane Blade is a bit awkward to sharpen on the 2" wide stones but I managed fine.
More soon ...
Nice one mate already sound like a pro.

Rob - All the gear but no idea ... But not for long!
ReplyDeleteMy first hand plane was a 4 1/2, which is why I sprung for the 3" wide solid-surface DMTs. But I'm glad to hear that you can successfully sharpen the iron of your #6 on a 2" wide stone. Do you mind sharing how you do it?
ReplyDeleteNot ideal I know but I try to keep the blade diagonal across the stone to increase its effective width and try and do both sides of the blade evenly - I guess I'll end up with a slight camber?
ReplyDeleteI have no idea. I've always sharpened freehand. And eventually I learned that I could freehand any plane iron on even a narrow stone. Just move it side to side instead of forward and back. You're more likely to introduce a slight camber that way, but that's not usually a bad thing.
